During the height of the pandemic and facing eviction, the community rallied and pulled off a miraculous fundraising effort to save the iconic West Bank Cafe and Laurie Beechman Theatre.  Despite the initial success, WBC was later denied critical government grants like the Restaurant Revitalization Fund (RRF) and the Shuttered Venue Operators Grant (SVOG), leaving them once again on the brink of closure.  But now, we have exciting news: their landlords, Related, are working with them! With a more favorable lease in place, and exciting revitalization plans, if we can raise 1M before the end of the year West Bank Cafe will not only survive, but THRIVE!​

Most recently, John arranged, orchestrated and was the Music Director for Carol Burnett’s 90th Birthday Special on NBC, which won the Emmy Award for Outstanding Primetime Variety Special. John participated in a live Playbill concert event in Times Square welcoming everyone back to Broadway, featuring Brian Stokes Mitchell, Jessica Vosk and Senator Chuck Schumer. McDaniel produced and directed a virtual concert of Sticks & Stones, for which he is also the composer, starring Audra McDonald & Javier Muñoz. He is also a camp director of Kristin Chenoweth’s Broadway Boot Camp. John directed Into The Woods & Hair in Concert at the historic Patchogue Theater, Sondheim Originals at 54 Below and Piano Men at Birdland. Broadway credits include Bonnie and Clyde (Drama Desk Nomination, Best Orchestrations), Catch Me If You Can, Brooklyn (Producer and Orchestrator), Annie Get Your Gun (Grammy Award), Taboo, Chicago, Grease, Patti LuPone on Broadway and Company – the Original Cast in Concert at Lincoln Center. On Television: The Rosie O’Donnell Show (2 Emmy Awards & 8 nominations). John has collaborated with Cab Calloway, Shirley MacLaine, George Burns, Joel Grey, Betty Buckley, Bette Midler, Shirley Jones & Katy Perry and has guest conducted at 15 Symphony Orchestras across America, including 5 concerts with his hometown St. Louis Symphony. We also come together to honor the memory of Jock Duncan Jr. who passed away in 2023 at the age of 88. Jock served as a Fund trustee for 13 years and lead by example, believing we should all strive to do the very most possible with our individual abilities and talents and to have love and compassion for others. He taught us all the value and importance of having a positive attitude, whatever the situation.

We are honored to continue the tradition of this event in Jock’s name and look forward to seeing you there.

Liz Callaway is a Tony and Grammy nominee and Emmy Award-winning actress, singer and recording artist. She made her Broadway debut in Stephen Sondheim’s Merrily We Roll Along, received a Tony Award nomination for her performance in Baby, and for five years, won acclaim as Grizabella in Cats. Off-Broadway she received a Drama Desk nomination for her performance in The Spitfire Grill (Playwrights Horizons), and also appeared in Brownstone (Roundabout), No Way to Treat a Lady, Marry Me a Little, and Godspell. Ms. Callaway has also established a major career as a concert and recording artist.  The award-winning Sibling Revelry (created with sister Ann Hampton Callaway) was presented to great acclaim at the Donmar Warehouse in London. Boom!,a celebration of the music of the 60’s and 70’s, also created with her sister, was recorded live at Birdland, and is currently touring performing arts centers around the country. Joseph Thalken is an award-winning composer, conductor and pianist whose theater and concert works have been performed internationally. His music has received support from the National Endowment for the Arts, the Somerled Charitable Foundation and the Shen Family Foundation. Thalken is the composer of the musicals Harold and Maude, Was, Borrowed Dust, Fall of ’94, and Inventions for Piano. His chamber orchestra ballet, Chasing Home, commissioned by Bruce Wood Dance, is receiving a world-premiere recording  by the Dallas Chamber Symphony, conducted by Richard McKay. He has served as music director and/or arranger for luminaries of Broadway and classical music, including Julie Andrews, Patti LuPone, Bernadette Peters, Renée Fleming, Rebecca Luker, Kristin Chenoweth, Liza Minnelli, Faith Prince, Michael Crawford, and Brian Stokes Mitchell, among many others. He performed with the New York Philharmonic for their 2019 Spring Gala, for which he also wrote several orchestrations.

You won’t want to miss The Musical Theater Project’s 25th-Anniversary Year Rendezvous Cabaret featuring Liz Callaway performing “Screen Gems.” Callaway will dazzle you with her gorgeous vocals. This New York theatrical legend boasts a career spanning 40 years on and off Broadway and in the best cabarets—and you know her voice from many Disney animated films. Although she is a master interpreter of Stephen Sondheim’s work, she points out that “I’ve always loved movie music,” and in this new show Callaway proves it with movie songs ranging from the 1930s to the present. Seeing a show starring Liz Callaway is an experience you won’t soon forget. 

The fun begins with cocktails at 6 PM at the historic Tudor Arms Hotel, followed by dinner and the show.

One of the strangest coincidences of modern musical theatre is the fact that its two foremost composers, Andrew Lloyd Webber, and Stephen Sondheim, share a birthday, March 22.
